In December 1993, the Council of Ministers of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) decided to create a new institution called the Regional Stock Exchange (BRVM). That institution, specialized in Finance, was formally opened on December 18th 1996.
The BRVM is a public limited company with a public service mission.
